How To Make a Skull Granny Square Crochet Stitch: Step-By-Step

Materials Needed:

-Crochet hook (Here’s a guide to pick the right size mm crochet hook here)

-Yarn (Choose the colors of your choice yarn out of your scrap stash and base your decisions on what you want to create, but I love the sport yarn weight acrylic.)

-Scissors to snip your yarn when finished

-Darning needle to finish off your ends

Steps:

Round 1, Steps 1-6: Magic Circle, Treble & Double Crochets

The first thing to do for the skull granny square stitch is start with a magic circle. Begin by creating a loop with your worsted weight yarn and crocheting into the center of it. Do this by making an adjustable loop and holding the knot so you can crochet a chain(ch) 3 to start. This will count as the first treble(tr) crochet of 9 total. Next, ch 4, then dc (double crochet) in the same ch as the 9 tr. To finish out this round, ch 4, then slip stitch (sl st) in the top of the first tr.

Round 2, Steps 7-13: Double & Single Crochets

Round 2 starts by chaining 1 where you placed the sl st, then placing a single crochet(sc) in the following stitch(st) and two sc in the next st. Continue by placing a sc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next st and repeat the steps in this sentence twice. Now, 6 sc around the ch 4 space(sp).

The next part of this round in the magic circle is to sc around the ch 2 sp (ch 2 counts as 1 dc), 2 dc around the ch 2 space(sp) then ch 2.

The finishing stitches of the skull are to sc around the ch 2 sp (counts as 1 dc). These stitches make a total of 4 dc around the ch 2 sp forming the teeth. Now to end the round sc around the ch 4 sp and with your background color sl st in the first sc (NOT the chain that doesn’t count as a stitch!)

Round 3 Step 14-23: BLO Double & Treble Crochets

Begin round three by chaining 3 (counts as the first dc), then dcBLO(back loop only) in the next st. Place 2 trBLO + ch 2 + 2 trBLO in the next st, skip a st and do 3dcBLO in the next st then ch 1. Skip four stitches then place 3dcBLO in the next st.

Begin the next corner with a ch 1, and then place 2 trBLO + ch 2 + 2 trBLO in the next st. This step is repeated twice, ch 1, skip 1 st then 3dcBLO in the next st. In the next stitch, ch 1, 2 trBLO + ch 2 + 2 trBLO.

To end the round three ch 1, then skip 1 st and do 3dcBLO in the next st. Now, ch 1, skip 1 st, then place 2dcBLO in the next st and with your next color sl st in the first dc.

Round 4 Step 24-34 Repeating Sequences

This round will have a lot of repetitive steps. Start round four by doing a ch 3 (counts as first dc). Then in the ch2sp place 3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc. Next is a repeat sequence, do 3 dc in the next ch1sp three times. Now, in the ch2sp do a 3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc set. Another three time repeat sequence 3 dc in the next ch1sp. Then in the ch2sp, 3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc. Now, a three time repeat sequence again, 3 dc in the next ch1sp. Next, in the ch2sp, 3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc. The final repeat sequence of the round is done three times; place 3 dc in the next ch1sp and finish off with 2 dc in the last ch 1 sp.
