DIY Ruffled Leg Warmers

DIY Ruffled Leg Warmers

Hi, I’m Terra, and you can usually find me over at mama says sew. Today I’m going to share a tutorial for these cute DIY ruffled leg warmers for a baby. They are pretty easy to sew and you don’t even need a serger. I did the contrast stitching with the rolled hem foot on a regular sewing machine.

I matched the ruffles with this felt flower headband. You can find the tutorial for it here.

This pair of leg warmers can be worn with a bodysuit, like I have them here. Or they would be great with a skirt or dress or over tights or leggings to keep those little legs warm during the cold winter months. Consider repurposing an old jacket!

And here are some cute little baby toes peeking out from under the ruffles.

To make this easy project, all you need is:

  • Knit fabric (scrap fabrics from another project should be enough-I used leftovers from this project)
  • Contrasting thread for the ruffles
  • Coordinating thread

You want the knit to have at least 50 percent stretch and have a good stretch recovery (meaning it will regain it’s original shape after being stretched). Make sure you use a stitch that stretches when you sew.

The measurements are for my baby, who is in 0-3 months size. Since baby legs are all different, I would recommend cutting out a top cuff and sewing it into a circle and trying it on your baby’s leg to ensure a perfect fit.

If repurposing an old sweater, cut off the sweater’s sleeves, turn them inside out and slip them onto the baby’s or child’s legs then use safety pins to mark where to stitch, cutting away the excess fabric. Also mark the desired length, remembering to leave enough fabric for the hem.

First, cut out your pieces. You need:

  • 2 legwarmers: 6 x 8.5 inches
  • 4 ruffles: 2 x 12 inches
  • 2 top cuffs: 6 x 3 inches
  • 2 bottom cuffs: 5 x 3 inches

Easy steps to hand made baby leg warmers

  1. Use a serger or rolled hem foot to sew a contrasting rolled hem on each side of all the ruffle pieces. You can also use a zig zag stitch; any kind of stretch stitch will do.

2. Gather your ruffles to the width of the leg warmer and stitch them to the bottom of each leg warmer. Make sure to leave enough room for the seam allowance to attach the bottom cuff.

4. Fold the leg warmers right sides together and stitch up the long side, making sure to keep the ruffles out of the bottom seam allowance (again, so you can attach the cuff).

5. Trim off any ruffles sticking into the seam allowance.

8. Line up the raw edges and sew the cuff to the top of the ruffled leg warmer.

9. Turn the cuff up and this is what the top of the ruffled leg warmer should look like.

10. Repeat with the bottom cuff, making sure the ruffles are out of the way so that you don’t accidentally catch them in your seam allowance.
