If you are looking for a light cake recipe to pair with  summer strawberries, give this angle food cake a try. It is really more simple than you would think!

Angel Food Cake Recipe

  • 1 cup sifted cake flour (I did use cake flour)
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar, divided
  • 10 large egg whites
  • 1  1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to make angel food cake

  • Preheat oven to 350°
  • To prepare cake, lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine flour and 1/4 cup sugar; set aside.
  • Beat egg whites with a mixer at high speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar and salt; beat until soft peaks form. Add remaining sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating until stiff peaks form.
  • Sift 1/4 cup flour mixture over egg white mixture; fold in. Repeat with remaining flour mixture, 1/4 cup at a time. Fold in vanilla.
  • Spoon the batter into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan, spreading evenly. Break air pockets by cutting through the batter with a knife. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Invert pan; cool completely. Loosen cake from sides of pan using a narrow metal spatula. Invert the cake onto a plate.

  1. I forgot to mention if you have an Angel Food Cake Pan that doesn’t have the legs we used to invert them over the top of a catsup bottle. Also I think Wal-Mart carries them.

  2. The Tube pan she’s referring to here isn’t a regular tube pan as we know it. We actually call them Angel Food Cake Pans since that’s all we ever use them for. They’re in 2 pieces. The outer edge and the inner ring. Most of them when you invert have 3 little legs to hold the cake up to cool. Also it’s easy to get the cake out. I just use a long straight knife and swoop it around the edge not cutting up and down but just scraping the edge around. Then for the center tube the same. Turn the pan over and loosen the bottom ring from the top and it drops right out.

  3. I LOVE angel food cake. Going to try this weekend.
    To Tab and Michele.

Just a thought…..thanks again for great receipe.

  4. 2-piece tube pans are wonderful!!! You use a knife or spatula to release the sides, and remove that part of the pan, and then you do the same for the bottom. Turns out perfect!! Super easy to clean, as well.

  5. Tab makes a good point, I’m curious about the same thing… But I love love this kind of cake!

  6. Do you have to make angel food cake in a tube pan? I love angel food cake, but I do not like tube pans, and refuse to buy one.
