What is Mexican Papel Picado?

If you’re unfamiliar with papel picado, it is a traditional Mexican decorative craft made by cutting intricate designs into colorful tissue paper using chisels or punches. It is a great way to adorn Mexican banners for your Cinco de Mayo decorations, altars on dia de los muertos, bridal showers, Mexican parties, birthday parties, Mexican weddings and other special occasions. With the help of a papel picado SVG file and a cutting machine, making a papel picado banner (Mexican paper banner) is EASY!

How to Make

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make using an SVG papel picado template.

  1. Download the SVG File above in the supply list. mexian papel picado svg file
  2. Load the SVG File into Cricut Design Space. Adjust the size and layout as needed to fit your cardstock. I rotated the image and enlarged it to fit 8 1/2 X 11 inch cardstock.
  3. Place cardstock on the cutting mat and load it into your Cricut machine.
  4. Follow the prompts on the screen to cut the design.
  5. Once you have cut out as many Mexican flags as you need, it’s time to assemble your papel picado banner. Lay out the flags in the order you want them to appear and attach them to a length of string or ribbon by threading the string through some of the holes at the top.

Hang your papel picado banner and enjoy!

Nacho Average Teachers!

A nacho bar was a super easy meal to pull off for the teachers. We set it up in our school cafeteria and let them help themselves.

For 80-90 teachers and staff we used the free version of sign-up genius to request the following and then purchased what wasn’t donated:

  • 22 pounds of ground beef
  • 1 container taco seasoning (we carefully choose this brand so it is dairy and gluten-free
  • 6 batches of Mexican Rice (two at a time in the instant pot)(if your school has the budget extra long Basmati rice works great to keep it from clumping)
  • 2- 107 ounce Ricos Gourmet Nacho Cheese Sauce (SAMS)
  • 2- Round Yellow Tortilla Chips (48 oz., 2 pk.) (SAMS)
  • 15- 16 ounce cans of vegetarian refried beans (important if you have vegetarians)
  • 40 Roma Tomatoes chopped (about 10 pounds)
  • 6 – 8 ounce bags of shredded lettuce (our teachers actually like the lettuce and 1 more bag would have made me feel better)
  • 6- 14 ounce squeezable sour cream
  • 8 – 12 ounces pre-made guacamole (placed in about 4 to 6 pastry bags to make it squeezable)
  • 2 jars sliced jalapenos
  • 4 – 24 Ounce Jars of Salsa

Of course, you know your teachers best so plan accordingly. For the most part, I read all the labels for suggested serving sizes and multiply by the number needed.

The teachers did love making their own nachos!
